What is Dental Veneer?

Dental veneers are thin shells that are attached to the front surface of the teeth to improve their appearance. Veneers are just one of the several ways to alter the appearance of teeth. It is made up of porcelain or resin composite material.

Veneers can be used to treat several different cosmetic concerns like chips, cracks, and breaks. They can change not only the color of teeth but also their size, shape, and length.

How Do Porcelain and Resin Veneers Differ?

Composite Resin Veneers

Composite Veneers are often made from a tooth-colored resin, the same type of material used for tooth bonding and fillings.

The material itself comes with small particles of hard filler. The composite resin is soft and malleable which allows dentists to easily shape and mold the material as required. Composite resin is less expensive as compared to porcelain veneers.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are thin shells of porcelain adhered to the outer surface of the tooth. The translucent properties of porcelain allow the veneer to catch light similar to the way a natural tooth does. This property makes veneer more esthetic and often a more desirable choice over composite resin.

With proper care, porcelain veneers can last 15-20 years. Also, according to the studies, porcelain veneers are more durable as compared to composite resin. Consult Porcelain Veneers & Laminates Lake Mary for porcelain veneers.

How to Use Dental Veneers?

There are two types of techniques used by dentists to place veneers: –

  1. Direct Technique

The direct technique involves preparing the tooth by cleaning and etching its surface. Dentists use some bonding material to stick resin to your teeth. The entire process of direct veneers can be done in a single visit only.

Composite resin veneers are applied using resin that is matched to the rest of your teeth. It may require an additional layer of resin to correct the length and shape. After correcting, the material will be hardened with a laser.  Thereafter, composite material will be checked for positioning before being polished. The dentist completes the process by getting rid of any excess material.

  1. Indirect Technique

Porcelain veneers use the indirect technique. This technique is a more invasive treatment as fillings involve removing some of the enamel of your teeth.  The removed part would be as thin as veneers.

On the first visit, the dentist will make an impression of your teeth, so the veneers can be made from the mold in the dental lab. This process can take a week or two. On the second visit, your dentist will complete the remaining process.
