Dental splints can be used to protect teeth from grinding, addressing the symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), or to treat loose and misaligned teeth. Splints, also known by terms such as mouth and night guards, come in various styles. A dentist can customize a dental splint for a very specific purpose, and generic models can also be purchased. Some advice from a dentist can be helpful in choosing the best option to manage a given dental problem.
Which are types of dental splint?
There are many different versions of this medical aid, which is useful for a wide variety of health problems. The most common models are:
- Grinding or bite splint,
- Dental splint as a replacement for braces,
- Sports protection rail,
- Dental splint against tension in case of misalignment of the jaw,
- Whitening tray,
- Fluoridation splint,
- Snoring splint,
- Radiation protection rail.
How much does a crunchy stick cost and what is its function?
An occlusal splint is used if you grind your teeth and suffer from jaw problems. The teeth also suffer from constant stress at night, because excessive pressure and rubbing of the teeth against each other leads to unnaturally strong abrasion that cannot be undone.
Clearly visible grinding marks are a warning sign to the dentist and he will recommend a bite splint. This makes nighttime crunching almost impossible. The application is painless, comfortable and shows quick results.
There are several types of crunch bars:
- The hard bite splint is made of clear plastic and looks like braces. It is most effective in correcting jaw misalignments because it gives the jaw a certain shape.
- The slats for soft bite are made of soft plastic and colorless with a rubber-like structure. Those affected usually find this splint less bothersome.
- The non-regulated slats are constituted by a simple soft plastic coating dental arch that simply prevents excessive wear.
- The adjusted bit guards are individually adapted to the jaw. They are able to compensate for the bite position and thus permanently reduce the unconscious grinding activity.
- The costs for grinding the bites vary depending on the material used. They are between 150 and 200 EUR. If more effort is required, for example due to a difficult dental situation, the price for the occlusal splint can be up to 500 EUR.
As a rule, compulsory health insurance bears the full cost of the therapy. However, costs for special work steps, such as functional diagnostics, are not always included in the service catalog. You must also expect an additional payment if you want higher quality materials or a design that deviates from the standard.
What are the costs of a dental splint instead of a brace?
In case of slight misalignments of the teeth, for example torsion and nesting, the invisible aligners are a good alternative to conventional braces.
For this purpose, a computer plan is created using 3D simulation, which accurately depicts all movements of the teeth during the course of treatment. Every two weeks you will receive new splints, which will gradually bring your teeth into the correct position. Discipline is required for desired success, because aligners need to be worn consistently over a longer period of time.
The costs for these aligners are covered by the health insurance company only in exceptional cases. You have to pay around 6,000 – 9,000 EUR for this out of your own pocket.
How much does a protective sports splint cost and when do I need it?
About 40 percent of all dental accidents occur as a result of sports activities. Typical injuries are:
- The loss of the entire tooth.
- A bruise, as a result of which the nerve of the tooth dies.
- Break off a piece of tooth.
Protective sports splints can prevent this, as can injuries to the joints of the lips, tongue or jaw.
The splints are made of elastic plastic, they are simply pushed onto the teeth. This can be transparent or tinted in brightly colored shades.
Depending on the sport, different variants are used:
|thin||Handball, punches, volleyball|
|medium||Baseball, mountain biking, inline skating, soccer|
|strong||Ice hockey, boxing, kickboxing, squash|
The price for sports protection splints starts at less than 50 EUR for ready-made models for children. Custom-made splints for adults cost between 150 and 300 EUR , depending on the effort. Legal health insurances do not grant any benefits unless there is a therapeutic component.
Does a dental splint really help against tension and how much does it cost?
It seems almost unbelievable at first, but tension, headache, and back pain can all be caused by jaw problems. The cause is often a wrong bite, in which the upper and lower jaws do not meet in the ideal position. As a result, not only chewing, but also the muscles of the face and head become tense. The result is a so-called tension headache. It can be felt primarily on the forehead, temples, and neck area, but can radiate to the back. In this case, occlusal braces usually bring quick relief.
The costs for this depend on the material used, the type of splint and the diagnostic methods used:
|soft occlusal splint||29-60 $|
|hard occlusal splint||60-585 $|
|non-adjusted bite splint (mini plastic splint)||410 – 583 $|
|adjusted occlusal splint||up to 2915 $|
In the case of diseases of the chewing system, health insurance usually covers the costs for the individual production of the splint. However, this is not always the case with CMD (craniomandibular dysfunction). In order not to suffer any unpleasant surprises, it is therefore necessary to present the treatment and cost plan of your dentist to the health insurance before the start of the treatment and to have the costs confirmed.
Whiter teeth with a splint: does it work and is it expensive?
This method is called “home whitening”. Perform bleeding at home, but under the supervision of the dentist. For this, the dentist first creates an individual dental splint. A good fit is important so that the bleach does not come in contact with sensitive gums.
The bleed guide has small indentations where you put some bleach before inserting it. The splint is worn overnight so that the active ingredient can work for about eight hours.
This bleeding is significantly cheaper than other methods. The average costs are between 200 and 400 euros, but they are not subsidized by health insurance.
What are the benefits of a fluoridation splint and how much does it cost?
Fluoridation braces are used as part of individual prophylaxis. These are plastic splints for lower and upper dental arches made to measure in the laboratory. These are used only when there is an increased risk of tooth decay, as they facilitate the weekly use of a fluoride gel:
- The gel adapts perfectly to the teeth.
- Less substance is needed as the splint fits snugly to the teeth.
- The use time of the splint and therefore the exposure time cannot be achieved even with the application on the patient with the brush.
The costs for the fluoridation splint produced by the laboratory and adapted by the dentist amount to approximately EUR 75 – 300. These are only covered by the health insurance in exceptional cases. You can get very affordable templates without customization for a few euros in drugstores and drugstores.

Does a cue really help and what are the costs?
This dental splint is also known as a protrusion splint. It prevents the back of the tongue from sinking into the throat and constricting the airways while lying on your back asleep. With the so-called tongue snorers, it can definitely minimize the development of night noise.
With the protrusion splint, the splint in the upper jaw is connected to the splint in the lower jaw. In the case of monobloc models, the upper and lower ribs are glued together. Biblock rails, on the other hand, consist of two parts that are connected by flexible joints, elastic bands or metal screw connections.
Simple snoring braces are available for free and cost between 50 and 100 euros. You can get these models at the pharmacy or on the Internet. It is important to make sure they fit well so that no misaligned teeth or jaws occur which could lead to other problems.
The protrusion splints adapted to the individual dentist are much more comfortable to wear and usually also prove more effective. However, the expensive diagnostics cost you 1,250 – 1,700 EUR .
Since they are between remedies and aids, the health insurance company’s cost assumption is a case-by-case decision. If the specialist recommends a corresponding therapy, health insurance companies usually bear the costs. If, on the other hand, you only suffer from a slight blockage of the airways, you must finance the brace yourself.
When do I need a radiation protection dental splint?
This dental splint, also known as a soft tissue retractor, is used to reduce the dose of radiation to the oral mucosa when cancer therapies are needed. It is only necessary if metals or amalgam fillings were used for the restoration of the tooth, as these would disperse the ionizing radiation and lead to an excessive dose of radiation in the adjacent tissue.
