What does detoxification medically mean?

Detoxification, that is, cleansing the body, is the subject of active debate in scientific circles due to the lack of unequivocal evidence to support the need for a detoxifying diet. Some scientists even argue that detoxification should be referred to as pseudo-medicine. In modern times,  detoxification  has become so popular that many so-called  detox diets have emerged, which are used to detoxify the body and lose weight – which, in theory, should make you feel better. The question often arises as to whether detox is necessary – diet, what it includes, how effective or dangerous it is. There is very little clinical evidence to support these diets. This is an area that deserves special attention as consumers need to be properly informed about the potential benefits and risks of various detoxifying programs.

The human body is often exposed to toxic substances, and the toxicity is now higher than ever. Toxicity comes in two main forms: external and internal. External toxins enter food and drink with the use of various medications or from the polluted environment through breathing. Internal toxins are the “waste” of our daily activities. This means that the biochemical processes of our metabolism create substances that need to be removed from the body. The detoxifying process includes mobilization, biotransformation and removal of toxic substances of exogenous and endogenous origin. These processes occur on a daily basis due to the functions of five main organs: kidney, liver, skin, lungs and intestines. Detoxification is a vital cellular task, and if the natural mechanisms of detoxification, that is, cleansing the body, do not work, this can lead to death.

It should also be remembered that healthy and regular digestion is the foundation of health. The intestines contain approximately 70% of the body’s defense systems, so healthy digestion is vital. Although a healthy body has natural detoxification mechanisms, that is, cleansing, due to modern lifestyle, bad habits and environmental factors, the natural organs which detoxify are overloaded. Excessive stress on the latter leads to chronic fatigue, digestive disorders, increased sensitivity of the body, as well as disease. Basically, the body can remove harmful substances without any additional help. Although there is not enough scientific evidence yet, choosing the right food can promote natural processes of detoxification. It is important to create a basic meal plan that defines the variety of foods needed to supply the body with essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals without overwhelming the digestive system.

It is important to note that proper detoxification is a properly formulated natural diet that improves body functions, strengthens it and restores energy. It is not a decision that has an immediate effect: its goals are long-term. This is not a detoxification process, but a diet designed to improve eating habits that improve quality of life.

In most cases, people see weight loss as the end result, not  cleansing the body  of accumulated harmful substances. Quick fixes are often used for this purpose, but short-term detoxification is not recommended. A more acceptable approach is to change your eating habits.

The best way to  detoxify, i.e. detoxifying the body , – do not smoke, do not abuse alcohol and exercise regularly physically, as well as enjoy a healthy and balanced diet, such as the Mediterranean diet .
