What is aestivation? 

Aestivation is a state of summer sleep and during aestivation, animals usually tend to rest in a cool place. They sleep during the hot hours of the day. Among the many animals that carry out aestivation activities are frogs, earthworms, snails, crocodiles, lizards, turtles and many others. Also, typically cold-blooded animals such as reptiles maintain their body temperature by reducing their metabolic activities and protecting themselves from very high temperatures. This is why aestivation is also called summer sleep. Naturally in the summer the body temperature rises, especially that of amphibians and reptiles can continue to rise, so it becomes necessary for them to find a shady and humid place to protect themselves from the breakdown of the temperature in their bodies.

What is hibernation? 

Hibernation is a winter sleep or state of sleep in endotherms, an organism tends to spend time in dormant conditions. They are not active at all. They find a warm place for themselves to protect their body from the surrounding cold or low temperature environment. Cold-blooded animals change their body temperature with environmental conditions. That’s why winter sleep occurs in cold-blooded animals. In winter, the body temperature drops and the animals feel cold, which is why they look for a warmer place to rest. To avoid this season, animals tend to hide until the season passes. Among the many hibernating animals are birds, mammals, small insects, bats, mice, and many others.

Hibernation is the phenomenon in which animals spend in conditions of night rest during the low temperature periods of the year or during the winter season.

Aestivation is the phenomenon in which animals spend dormant conditions during the high temperature periods of the year or during the summer season.

Hibernation and estivation are two sleep patterns represented by animals during different climatic conditions throughout the year. Hibernation refers to the phenomenon in which animals such as rodents undergo a period of rest during cold climates, while aestivation is the phenomenon of rest during hot climates. The main reason animals undergo this dormancy period is to conserve energy during extreme weather conditions and to maintain homeostasis during the conditions.
